Welcome to the open-source platform of the Action for Life Skills and Values in East Africa (ALiVE). This is our way of sharing with the world what we have learnt and produced since 2021.
- Contextualised assessment tool for problem-solving, collaboration, self-awareness and respect
- A repository of scenario-based and performance task items for the East Africa context, developed with more than 50 local experts
- A dataset of SEL outcomes from the large-scale assessment using these tools, with …datapoints from 45,000+ adolescents aged 13-17 years
- A rich mine of indicators from 37,000+ households, linked to adolescent-level personal indicators
- A repository with training manuals and data reports.
The platform aspires to be a comprehensive data repository and tools bank for assessing a broad spectrum of life skills and values prioritized by the education systems in East Africa.
This will be updated periodically to provide a rich experience for users, stretching it to primary-age (6-12 years) and school-based assessments to meet a variety of learning objectives. The platform will be tailored to support policy and program development for these essential skills in Africa.

From East Africa to the World: Contextual Assessments for 21st Century Competences
ALiVE is an initiative of the Regional Education and Learning Initiative (RELI), a network of 60 civil society organizations in East Africa working to improve learning outcomes. The ALiVE Household-based Assessment Tool was developed for both in and out of school adolescents aged 13 to 17 years across Kenya, Tanzania (Mainland and Zanzibar) and Uganda.
The survey tool was designed to assess the proficiencies of adolescents across four areas of functioning: the life skills of self-awareness, problem solving, and collaboration, and the value of respect. It provides a snapshot of how young people would respond to situations that could be seen as problematic (drawing on their problem solving skills); how they would respond to negative events that impacted themselves or their community (drawing on their respect for and awareness of self and others); and how they would work together when faced with tasks that would be difficult to complete alone (drawing on their collaboration skills).
